80-Climate+ Impact · Remote, Brussels (Remote)

About Us

Textile Exchange is a global non-profit driving a positive impact on climate change across the fashion and textile industry. It guides a growing community of brands, manufacturers, and farmers toward more purposeful production from the very start of the supply chain.

By 2030, its goal is to guide the industry to achieve a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions within fiber and raw material production. Its focus is holistic and interconnected, accelerating the adoption of practices that improve the state of our water, soil health, and biodiversity too.

For real change to happen, everyone needs a clear path to positive impact. That’s why Textile Exchange believes that approachable, step-by-step instruction paired with collective action can change the system to make preferred materials and fibers an accessible default, mobilizing leaders through attainable strategies, proven solutions, and a driven community.

At Textile Exchange, materials matter. To learn more, visit TextileExchange.org.

Working at Textile Exchange

We work remotely with a team located in 20+ countries. We are a diverse group committed to harnessing the strengths of the global textile industry to accelerate change toward climate and other key environmental goals. We work collaboratively on important environmental issues around the world by working and interacting with farming groups, processors, brands, retailers, and environmental experts in the textile and fashion industries around the world. We offer an opportunity to join a cutting-edge global environmental nonprofit and to help strengthen the impact of our organization. Each Textile Exchange employee is offered a competitive compensation package with paid time off, yearly bonus, opportunities for continuing education, and more.

Job Summary

Textile Exchange is seeking a Public Affairs Strategist to join the Climate+ Impact team, which ensures that all Textile Exchange programs and platforms are driving measurable impact reduction and positive outcomes and are enabling the achievement of the industry’s “Climate+” goals, which include a 45% reduction in GHG emissions from textile fiber and material production by 2030 while also addressing other interdependent impact areas such as biodiversity, soil health, and water.

While Textile Exchange is not a policy-focused organization, over the past several years, we have recognized the importance of emerging policy initiatives – particularly in the EU – to the achievement of our Climate+ goals and to the success of key initiatives such as our fiber and raw materials standards. Our approach to policy engagement is not to “lead” on initiatives, but to educate policymakers where needed, utilizing the extensive subject matter expertise of our members and team. Examples of relevant policy files include the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and the Substantiating Green Claims Directive, as well as other files relevant to standards and Textile Exchange’s “Climate+” impact areas including biodiversity, soil health, and water.

For the past several years, Textile Exchange’s policy engagement has been led by the Climate+ Impact Director and Senior Manager in a part-time capacity. We are now seeking someone to join the organization full-time to engage more deeply in key issues and to enable a more proactive approach to our policy work. Another important function of this role will be to enable regular communication about policy updates, both externally (with members) as well as internally (with the Textile Exchange team.) This role will also have the opportunity to build out a longer-term policy strategy for the organization.

The primary focus of this role will be on EU policy; however, limited support of member state-level policy and/or emerging U.S. federal or state-level policy may also be required.

Reports to: Director, Climate+ Impact

Ideal location: Brussels

Like all roles at Textile Exchange, the role will be primarily home-based. Textile Exchange is a United States-based, remote-working organization with a global team; your key colleagues will be in Europe/UK and the United States.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute organizational policy positions and next steps on key issues.
  • Provide detailed feedback on behalf of Textile Exchange into policy proposals, public consultations, and other channels.
  • Where needed to clarify urgent points, identify and meet directly with relevant policymakers.
  • Develop and oversee a 2-3 year policy engagement strategy and annual policy priorities.
  • Ensure that policymakers consult with Textile Exchange for subject matter expertise when developing policy proposals relevant to fibers and raw materials in the apparel, fashion, and textile sector.
  • Manage Textile Exchange’s relationship with its policy advisory consultant.
  • Serve as the organization’s main point of contact for policy collaborations (e.g. Policy Hub, ISEAL); participate in relevant working groups, meetings, and other discussions.
  • Execute regular communications related to policy updates, including planning and hosting internal and/or external webinars, sharing updates in recurring internal and external meetings or newsletters, providing updates and responses via the Textile Exchange Hub, and more. Provide updates to the Textile Exchange Board as requested.
  • On a limited basis, support Textile Exchange’s engagement (primarily reactive) in relevant U.S. federal and/or state-level policy issues.
  • Manage and track Textile Exchange’s direct policy engagement overall, to ensure compliance with IRS requirements for U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations under the 501(h) election.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum 5 years of experience in EU policy / public affairs. Prior experience representing/working with nonprofit organizations and/or trade associations is a plus.
  • A deep understanding of the European policymaking process and EU institutions is necessary. Working knowledge of United States policy is a plus.
  • Interested in and passionate about environmental sustainability and the apparel/textile/fashion sector. Good knowledge of sustainability issues in the sector and ability to distill this knowledge into well-articulated arguments.
  • Critical thinking/problem solving; ability to quickly and efficiently synthesize information into specific actions and make decisions with speed and accuracy based on the best available information.
  • Project management experience.

Other Required Skills

  • Entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Team player.
  • Able to work independently in a virtual workplace. Self-motivated and strong work ethic.
  • Well-organized and able to manage multiple priorities and varying pressures to meet strict deadlines as needed.
  • Excellent communication, written, and grammatical skills in English; ability to synthesize complex topics to non-policy experts.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, and the ability to quickly learn new systems.
  • Adaptability and ability to deliver value within a rapidly evolving field.
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally for meetings and events when required.
  • Ability to work across different time zones (within reason, it is not expected that you will work extremely long hours).

Employment Package

  • The position is full-time, 40 hours/week
  • Compensation for this role: 65,000-80,000EUR
  • Work from home, virtual/remote (flexible working hours a must due to differences in international time zones)
  • Textile Exchange is currently unable to provide sponsorship for work permits. Candidates need to have the existing right to work in nominated working locations.
  • To be filled as soon as possible (start date to be agreed between both parties)

How to Apply

Please submit it here:

  1. Resume
  2. Cover Letter

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis as they are submitted. Early application is strongly encouraged.
